One thing we hear a lot is that North Devon doesn’t have a diverse community. After all, looking at current published stats, 98% of our community is white.

But when you look a bit deeper, North Devon is more diverse than you might first think. And that’s great, because life would be boring if we were all the same!

Diversity is so much more than race and ethnicity. We have a community with a vast array of abilities, ages, backgrounds, religions and life experiences.

We have valuable and growing minority communities and we have diversity in gender identity, gender expression, biological sex and sexual orientation.

June is Pride month across the world, which celebrates the contribution of our LGTBQ+ communities, and it’s great to see this being marked by so many companies and institutions across the world.

However, people are also rightly asking whether displaying a rainbow flag is just window dressing, or if organisations are actually taking positive steps to include all members of their community.

Hospice care is for every person who needs it, so we work hard to make sure it is available and accessible to all, free of charge.

I’m proud of the fact that at North Devon Hospice, whether you are staff, a volunteer or a beneficiary of our services, you are valued as a unique individual. Everyone is welcome at North Devon Hospice.

Understanding, accepting and valuing differences in people enables us to see the world from multiple perspectives, learn from each other and continually improve what we do. At the same time, we can never be complacent.

That is why we are working towards a new strategy which is designed to make us an even more inclusive charity.

Through this strategy, we will continue to review our policies, systems and processes, to ensure that we are not inadvertently constructing barriers to services or employment. We will be mindful of how we present the hospice, celebrating our diversity as an organisation and demonstrating that we are inclusive.

We are keen to reach out to community groups and work in partnership with them. We also welcome feedback and if you have any ideas as to how we can be doing more, please get in touch.

It’s vital that we walk the walk, not just talk the talk. North Devon Hospice is here to support everyone.
