Charity recognised for fire safety advice work

North Devon Gazette

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service has presented North Devon Homes, a charity providing affordable homes for people who need them, with a certificate for their work in helping residents to be aware of fire hazards. Â

On presenting the certificate, Sallie McKay-Roper from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue service said: “We are committed to reducing fire deaths and serious injuries and so it’s important for us to help people in our communities know how they can make their homes fire safe. Â

We rely on working with partner agencies, like North Devon Homes, who are working in the communities and can refer vulnerable people to us. We are pleased to present North Devon Homes with a 100 referrals certificate for referring 100 people to our service for our free home safety visits.” Â

North Devon Homes Building Safety Manager, Will Bowden, added: “When we are out and about in the community, we give safety messages and advice but we are not the experts and we might not spot the hazards that the fire service would. Â

“When we refer a customer for a free home safety visit, we know they are getting expert knowledge and guidance. Our Customer Safety Board is key in helping us to engage with those who are hard to reach. As trained advocates for safety, they help us to raise the level of awareness and knowledge and can disseminate that information peer to peer.” Â

Customer safety is a priority for North Devon Homes and the certificate highlights the continuous hard work of the team in ensuring they are putting measures in place to protect their residents. Â Â

“We are working really hard on reducing inequality in North Devon”, said Director of Neighbourhoods, Marc Rostock. “Team NDH are passionate about ensuring all customers have access to this life saving advice.” Â

North Devon Homes is committed to continuing to refer customers for the free home safety visits. Anyone who is interested in finding out more is asked to contact their Customer Care Team on 01271 312500 and ask for a free fire safety visit referral. Â
