TWO groups of Barnstaple Brownies are putting on their charity hats in aid of an orphanage in Tanzania.
The 3rd Barnstaple Rainbows and 9th Barnstaple Brownies will be working over the next year
on the Guiding movement’s new programme ‘Together We Can,’ which promotes the UN’s Millennium Development Goals and proves to the girls that however small and young they are, they can make a difference.
They will be working on badges for fundraising, advocate, raising awareness and volunteering.
To start their project, the youngsters are raising money to send provisions out to an orphanage in Tanzania called Forever Angels.
This follows a visit and talk from Newport Primary School teacher Jennie Harvey, who has been a volunteer at the orphanage.
Over the next year the girls will work on a local charity and for Forever Angels.
They have already asked local patchwork groups to make quilts and teddies for the children, as they feel every child should have their own toy and blanket. They are also looking for WI groups, knitting groups and individuals who would like to sew or knit a teddy or quilt for the charity.
The girls’ first fund raiser will be a Ladies Christmas Shopping Night at The Park Hotel in Barnstaple, from 7pm-9pm on Tuesday, December 6, with a 1 entry fee.
There has been a good response from local businesses to buy stalls at the event and donate raffle prizes and shoppers will be offered a chance to have a glass of wine, chat to friends, have a manicure and shop all in one place - without the children.
The Brownies are also collecting items on the orphanage’s wish list to send out to Tanzania and invite anyone who wishes to donate some on the night. If companies wish to contribute they are invited to call Harriet on (01271) 345230.
The wish list includes: sweets, disposable nappy liners, nappy sacks, sterilising tablets for baby bottles, large disposable bin liners, rusks, baby rice, packet weaning food, bubbles, balloons, face paint and fitted cot sheets.
