SIXTEEN members of the Bideford Bombers BMX Club were among 223 riders taking part in the opening round of the South West Regional racing season at Newton Abbot on Sunday.

Among six new riders, Zack Berryman made an immediate impression by winning the 13-15 years novice category.

Richard Chapple returned to the sport and finished second in the 30-34yrs cruiser B final. His daughter Leah was fifth in the 9-10 years girls experts.

Cyril Jury, fiancee Rachel Brooks and Dave Brooks have all the Bombers from the Exeter club. Rachel, who is currently ranked SW1, finished first in the 17-29 years female cruisers. Cyril, Dave and Dan Jury competed in the 17+ years payback class and finished second, third and fourth respectively in the B final.

Fletcher Powe and Curtis Gatting were second and fifth in the six years and under novices and Ethan Cox Eddings came fifth in the nine years expert group.

Four Bombers made the step up from novices to experts – Alex Hammett was first in the 15 years final; Tom Searles was the only Bombers rider to get into an A final and did well to finish eighth; Zak Scales and Ben Searles were third and sixth in the 13 years B final; Harvey Roberts took seventh in the 14 years B final; and Rob Steadman finished 4th in the 45+ B final.

The Bombers have seen a healthy increase numbers with their new track and facilities at Pollyfield. New members are always welcome to join them for training 2.30pm Saturdays and 6.30 Thursdays. More on the website
