CONDITIONS were just about ideal for the annual Bideford Head rowing races on the River Torridge on Sunday.
Two races were held over a 4,800 metre stretch of river between Halspill and Bideford Police Station, attracting nearly 50 crews from across the South West.
The two divisions of racing saw one race held on the incoming tide and the second on the outgoing tide, providing differing conditions and times.
In the first event the winning Junior 18 crew from Bideford Blues recorded a time of 16 mins 36 secs to cover the course, while in the second division it was the Castledore (Fowey) quad who recorded the fastest time of 14 mins 31 secs.
Top performers for the Bideford Reds were their women's Senior A four of Hannah Bright, Claire Spearman, Judith Atherton, Sarah Fellows and cox Abbie Dunn, who finished as the top women's crew and also came sixth place overall in a time of 17 mins 36 secs.
In the second division there was a tight race between the Reds/ Blues composite veteran four of Neil Pennington, Nigel Cann, Glenn Wilkins and Colin Pennington and the all-Reds Senior C coxed four of Rufus Smith, James Williams, Jon Lamont and Andy Maynard. Less than 10 seconds separated the two crews, with the veterans just squeezing home at the finish and taking second place overall in this division in a time of 14mins 39secs.
The young Reds Junior crew of Miles Lemer, Adam Crowther, Alex Ferrenday, Drew Mackenzie and cox Connor Allsop came home as the top Junior 14 crew in the second division, finishing 11th overall in a time of 16 mins 46 secs.
Bideford Blues had 11 crews competing in the two divisions.
In Division 1, the Men's Junior 18 four of: Milo George, Christopher Glover, Tom Pugsley and Tom Luca with cox Christopher Daniels, recorded the fastest time in the division of 16 mins 36 seconds in this division. A Women's Junior 18 four, Women's Junior 16 four and a Junior16 Double, all recorded good times
Seven Blues crews set off in Division 2.
Alice Jackson won the Junior 16 Singles race, with clubmate Zoe Robertson taking second place.
A Men's Senior C four, Women's Senior C four, Men's Junior 16 Quad and a Women's Junior 16 Double all posted good times.
