Bideford’s colourful start to Atlantic Watersports

Competitors from across Europe gathered in Bideford on Sunday for the start of the Atlantic Watersports Games

The Atlantic Watersports Games opened in Bideford on Sunday, bringing more than 300 young competitors from England, Scotland, Wales, France, Spain and Portugal to compete in four days of watersports events across North Devon this week.

An estimated 3,000 people watched the colourful Olympic-style start as the games opened with banner carrying competitiors in their national outfits parading across Bideford’s old bridge and around the town.

They assembled on The Quay to be welcomed by Torridge District council leader Barry Parson and for greetings to be given be leaders from each of the competing groups.

The week’s sporting programme continues with events taking place daily at each venue from Monday to Thursday : Bideford - rowing and sea kayaking at high tide; Croyde - surfing and surf kayaking 10am to 5pm; Saunton Sands - surf life saving 10am to 5pm; Roadford Lakes - sailing and windsurfing 10am to 5pm; Westward Ho! - kite surfing 10am to 5pm.
