Bideford stretch ahead

BIDEFORD beat St Austell 31-10 at King George’s Field to go seven points clear of the Cornishmen at the top of the Cornwall and Devon table.

Now Bideford are 13 clear of third-placed Hayle in a division that has two automatic promotion places.

St Austell kept Bideford to 12-3 in the first half, but could not cope with them in the second.

Mark Schofield, on a rare visit home from university, scored two tries for the winners. Sam Olde, Matt Dennis and James O’Sullivan had one each. Ollie Wickett landed three conversions from five attempts.

St Austell’s Matt Shepherd converted a first-half penalty and a second-half try by Paul Winterbottom.
