Robins end Crusaders’ 12-match unbeaten run

BIDEFORD flashed their Evo-Stik League Southern credentials with a 2-1 win at unbeaten leaders Hungerford Town on Saturday.

The Robins ended the Crusaders’ 12-game unbeaten Division One South and West league run with goals by Ben Wood and Richard Groves in either half.

Eight points clear at the start of play, Hungerford deserved the respect of the visiting North Devon side.

But Bideford started brightly and took a deserved lead on 27 minutes when Wood finished from close range after his first effort was saved by goalkeeper Michael Watkins.

Matt Andrew had two good chances to increase the lead as the visitors continued to pull the strings in midfield but Hungerford levelled when Nicholas Ogbanufe’s precision cross was met by Luke Brewer’s diving header.

Bideford refused to let the hosts settle into the match and they found themselves on top again when Andrew was fouled on the edge of the box 15 minutes into the second half.

Groves took responsibility for the free-kick, sending it around the wall and beyond Watkins.

Bideford are still fourth in the table but could move into second with their two games in hand. The Robins play Poole Town on Saturday and Abingdon United on Tuesday night, both at the Sport Ground.
