Bideford boxer gets Navy call-up

Bideford ABC boxer Kyle De-Banks achieved a life time ambition when he became a Navy officer this year and he has been called into the Navy boxing team.

Light heavyweight De-Banks had to go through a week’s intense training, pushing his body and skills to the limit. The selection included hundreds of hopeful boxers, with only two being selected at each weight at the end of the week.

De-Banks thanked Bideford ABC for giving him “the best foundations for his boxing career possible.”

He joined the boxing club at the age of 16 and under the guidance of coach Dick Kersey went on to win 18 of his 28 bouts and the British University championship.

Now on the Navy team, De-Banks will be given plenty of time to train and compete, but still hopes to take part in Bideford’s local shows.

Bideford ABC also has three prospects who have been called up to train with the Western Counties squad.

Soane Coysh, Ricky Dymond and Rob Palmer did not disappoint. The regional coach kept a close eye on them and they hope to be called up to box for the region in the near future.
