North Petherton take a knock from Bideford

BIDEFORD defeated North Petherton 8-5 to knock the Somerset side off the top of the Western Counties table.

But in the log jam at the top of the table – only six points between the top five – Bideford actually slipped a place despite winning.

Torquay Athletic went past Bideford on bonus points after they walloped Exeter Saracens 34-12.

There wasn’t a lot in it on paper, although Bideford team manager Dave Harris felt the scoreline should have been wider.

Said Harris: ‘I felt we played all the rugby, especially in the first half.

“We dominated in the scrums – pushing them all over the place – which was impressive as they are a big side.

“The second half was a bit tighter and that was when they scored their try”

Ollie Wickett was on target for Bideford with a penalty after 15 minutes. James Buckland winged in for a corner try before the break.

After the interval Petherton got on the board thanks to a try by Jamie Cox, but didn’t look like scoring again.

Bideford lost prop James O’Sullivan with a neck injury, but expect him to be fit by this Saturday for the away game at Wellington.
