Robins miss the chance to go second

BIDEFORD missed the chance to go second in the Evo-Stik League Southern with a 3-1 defeat at Sholing.

The Robins deserved at least a point in the game against their Division One South and West rivals, who have slipped down the table after a strong start to the season.

Bideford won the season’s early encounter with the Southampton-based side at the Sports Ground, but failed to turn dominance into points in the reverse fixture.

Lee Wort gave the hosts the lead with a goal in the first minute before Bideford saw an effort rebound off the post immediately after.

The North Devon side looked the more dangerous of the two but decent efforts from distance were either saved or went wide of the mark.

With frustrations threatening to boil over a-la at Hartley Witney in the FA Cup two weeks previously, the equaliser eventually came in the 64th minute after a fine run into the area by Matt Andrew released Matt Hockley to score.

The hosts restored their lead again two minutes later when goalkeeper Ollie Chenoweth fumbled a Barry Mason cross only for the ball to bounce off the back of Paul Preston.

With the game stretched as Bideford searched for an equaliser, Wort collected a long ball to round Chenoweth from 15 yards with a minute to play.

Bideford travel to London on Saturday to play Carlshalton Athletic in the first round (qualifying) of the Carlsberg FA Trophy.
