Early cup exit and seventh straight home defeat in disappointing weekend for Town

BARNSTAPLE Town suffered a disappointing first round Les Phillips League Cup defeat at the hands of holders Hallen on Saturday.

Town had beaten their opponents 2-1 in the league on the first game of the season, but they were unable to thaw a stubborn visiting defence in the freezing conditions at Mill Road.

Hallen took an early lead through a James Clarke free-kick and held on to defend their lead and keep one hand on the cup they won back in April.

Barnstaple edged the game in terms of possession but were unable to put the Bristol side under any real pressure in a frustrating afternoon for the players and the 60-odd supporters.

They will be hoping to put an end to a run of seven straight home defeats when they play Corsham Town in the league this Sunday.

Ilfracombe’s league cup game away to Corsham Town was postponed due to the weather. The two sides will try again on Saturday, December 18.

Ilfracombe are away to mid-table Wells City on Saturday.
