Barnstaple orchestra plays for new recruits

Joseph Bulmer

THE Petrovian Orchestra will be holding its Autumn Concert at Christ Church in Bear Street, Barnstaple, on Saturday, November 20 – and would be delighted if any potential new recruits would like to go along.

The 7.30pm concert will see the performance of works including The Overture to the Merry Widow by Nicolai, Country Gardens by Percy Grainger, Three Bavarian Dances by Elgar, Espana by Chabrier and Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony No 7.

The event is being held to boost orchestra funds but also to catch the eye and ear of any local musicians who might like to find out more about joining the orchestra.

It is hoped young players – particularly of violin and viola - will take advantage of the free concert entry for under 18s and the chance to find out more about the orchestra’s activities. Older players are equally welcome! The standard required is round that of Grade 8.

The Petrovian Orchestra meets every Tuesday during term time at Park School in Barnstaple to rehearse a wide variety of music. It stages some three concerts each year, often in aid of a local charity.

Tickets for the concert are 6 each. To find out more about joining the Petrovian Orchestra, call (01271) 371961.
