Sarah so close to the big prize after being given surprise shot at the Red or Black fortune

A BARNSTAPLE mum-of-one came within a whisker of winning a million pounds after being selected to take part in the hit ITV game show Red or Black.

Sarah Scott, 25, beat thousands of other hopefuls to make it through to the last 32 of the competition – just five steps away from a once-in-a-lifetime spin of the giant roulette wheel on the show’s live final.

Sarah, a media consultant at the North Devon Gazette, was given a surprise call-up for the show after travelling to London to support her partner Jason Burmingham in the first round event at Wembley Stadium, in July.

“I hadn’t applied to take part but they needed a few more contestants and asked if I’d like to enter,” said Sarah.

“I’ve never entered anything like this before and couldn’t believe my luck when they asked me to take part.”

The game of chance, devised by X Factor mogul Simon Cowell, gives thousands of ordinary people the chance to become an instant millionaire, simply by choosing red or black.

The show, presented by Ant and Dec, was aired on television every night last week, with Sarah featuring on the Monday night programme. While Jason was knocked out in the first round it showed Sarah and 64 other contestants vying to stay in the competition at a disused quarry near Cardiff.

“It was the same set where they had filmed one of the Harry Potter movies,” said Sarah.

“I made it through to the last 32 but chose the wrong colour during the round where two diggers had to stack tyres.

“It was a very long day filming, but it was exciting and very nerve-wracking.”

Data security consultant Ian Murphy, from Corsham, got the chance to spin the wheel for 1million but lost out on the money when the ball landed in the black.
