Council hands over money from Torrington Lidl development

TORRIDGE District Council’s Lead Member for Communities and Culture, Councillor Jane Whittaker, has presented a cheque for 10,000 to The Plough Arts Centre in Torrington.

The money comes from the Section 106 funding from the Torrington Lidl development, money that was earmarked for use with the Arts in Torrington.

In consultation with Great Torrington Town Council, it was decided that the best use of the funds would be to give the money to the “Small Venue With The Big Reputation.

Councillor Whittaker said: “I am delighted that we have this opportunity to present the Centre with this much needed financial boost.”

Director of The Plough, Richard Wolfenden-Brown, added “The work of Michael Tighe of Torrington Town Council and Malcolm Harris of Torridge District Council to secure this funding from Lidl is much appreciated.

“Compared to other arts venues, The Plough is unusual in generating 96 per cent of its income through the box office, which means the support from Lidl is all the more vital and welcome in these challenging economic times.”
