Saunton

South Western Counties Championships: The championships were this year hosted by Saunton, with the top amateurs from the six counties competing in strokeplay and matchplay events. Wiltshire were runaway winners in the strokeplay competition, winning by 20 shots from Cornwall and Gloucestshire, with Devon back in fifth place. Ben Stow from Rushmore, Wiltshire won the individual prize with a 69 and 74, his 69 being the only score to beat par in the 36 hole competition. Jimmy Mullen from Royal North Devon was the best placed Devon player with a 75 and 73, finishing in 10th place. The young stars from Wiltshire also won the Round Robin matchplay event and qualified to represent the South West in the national finals at Ganton in Yorkshire.

Daily Mail Foursomes: Dave Lee and Stuart Darke progressed to the fifth round of the Daily Mail Foursomes with a 2&1 win over Tavistock Golf Club. This was an impressive performance as they were giving two shots to their opponents on an away course.

Round 4: Saunton closed the gap on Division 2 leaders Holsworthy by winning round four at Portmore. Veterans Angry Golfer: Mike Elliott continued his recent excellent form by winning the Angry Golfer competition off an 18 handicap. Sharing a score of 36 points with Robin Butcher (12), David Lloyd (5) and Tom Stirzaker (15), Elliott won on the last six holes from Butcher, who beat Lloyd to second place on the back nine holes. Fifty-six members played in difficult conditions.
