Spanning an age range of 16 – 60, Appledore Rowing Club achieved a magnificent crew in every final, a feat normally reserved for host club Caradon, based in Saltash.
Mixed rowing, three male and three female rowers, is often an after-thought at regattas, however this championship is taken very seriously and featured the top clubs from across the South-West.
Appledore Juniors showed great potential as, all aged around 16, they competed in the Under 18s, racing against older and bigger crews yet still achieving a podium position, crossing the line in third place.
The Open category saw the toughest competition with 42 crews entered, meaning 4 rounds of racing was needed to whittle down the numbers. Appledore took a comfortable second place in their first round before storming to victory in their quarter final.
A very tight turnaround to their semi-final saw the crew draw on their stamina and strength to come from behind to finish third position and qualification. A fiercely contested final saw clashing on buoy turns, a disqualification and penalties, resulting in Appledore being awarded fourth place, despite crossing the line in third.
Appledore’s Veteran (over 40) crew had a smooth journey through the rounds. They took first place in round one and then third in their semi-final to secure a spot in the final. A close but less controversial race saw Appledore finish an impressive fifth overall.
Appledore have a very strong Men’s over 50s SuperVet crew, but the Women’s squad have been struggling to find their form in the last year. However, this untested combination crew achieved a relaxed second place in round one, then cruised their semi-final in second place, conserving their energy for the final. These tactics proved effective as Appledore stormed ahead in the first leg of the race, only to lose out to Caradon on the final buoy turn and finish in silver medal position.
An excellent day of racing for the North Devon club, again proving they can hold their own against the best Gig rowing crews. Ilfracombe also entered the championship, making it to the quarter finals of the Open event and the semi-finals in the Vets.
