All set for Seavington

Picturesque Littlewindsor stages the Seavington meeting this Sunday, April 10.

The seven race card begins at 2pm, preceded at 1pm by two pony races, qualifiers for the Wessex Pony Racing Series Finals in May.

The 15-entry Ladies’ Open race catches the eye. Entries include course winner Carroll’s O’Tully, prolific Cornish raider Innocent Rebel, who was fourth at Wadebridge in March, and the Wests’ Ask Again, already the winner of 16 races and sure to be suited by the stiff Littlewindsor track. Ask Again gets the vote, but the two alternatives are Monkerty Tunkerty, who is unbeaten in his two outings for Exford trainer-rider Jess Westwood, and Heather Sheppard’s progressive The Slug, who beat subsequent Larkhill winner Own Line at Ston Easton and looks the sort to be suited by the Ladies’ Open 11st weight conditions.

Former Horse & Hound Cup winner Southwestern looks right back to his best this season and is an automatic selection if turning out for the Men’s Open. In his absence, Gunner Be Quick may be able to repeat last year’s victory for the Tory family.

Former top chaser Hoo La Baloo catches the eye in the Novice Riders’ race, where Philip Prince can choose between Distant Thunder and dual Larkhill winner Preacher Boy. Monkerty Tunkerty holds an engagement and will get the vote if the Westwood family take this option.

Four are entered for the Hunt Members race, including 2009 winner Carroll’s O’Tully and Wetherby Hurdle winner Isaac Newton. Bob Buckler’s Different Trades was fourth to Whizzaar in a Taunton Hunter Chase and is the form horse of the contest.

Black Forest Lodge winner Alysia’s Flame and the Dimonds’ Badbury Rings scorer Merry Terry are two to consider in the Restricted contest.

Two Maiden races also feature on the card. Godstone runner-up Cut The Lugsreilly looks the one for the 2m4f contest. Apple A Night and Shuffles are two suggestions for the 3m event.

The course is situated on the Dorset/Somerset border 3 miles south of Crewkerne off the A3066. First race: 1.00pm (ponies); 2.00pm (point-to-point). Admission: 20 per car including up to 4 adults; 5 per additional adult; 10 single occupancy; 5 pedestrians.
