A busy day is on the cards at Ottery St Mary on Saturday, March 5, where the East Devon Hunt has received more than 160 entries.
The first of eight races is under starters’ orders at 11.30am when members, subscribers and farmers line up. The seven entries include the multiple winning Rockwithacaveman who makes his first appearance of the season, Quaddick Lake who has finished in the placings twice this year and last year’s winner Gone Missing.
Two divisions of the open maiden have 27 runners in each and among the many horses to note who could score their first ever success are Bernie The Banker, second at Wadebridge earlier in the season, Tachbury, who has finished in the frame on his three starts this season, and the Leslie Jefford-trained Tamatown.
He finished second to Prudent George at Buckfastleigh two weeks ago and there’s every chance he’ll go one better.
Jefford also saddles Turtle Tim in a hot looking intermediate race which is a qualifier for Exeter Racecourse’s final on May 3 when Peter Andre will be singing live after racing.
The gelding was fifth at Buckfastleigh in a race won by Princesse De Rome with Lucette Annie, Cappoquin and Madam Noso filling the next three places. With these three also entered as well as Pendoun, Now Listen to Me, Brook Castle and Mr Redwood, it looks set to be a competitive race.
Next up is the novice riders’ race with another exciting race on the cards with Barneys Mate and Dare To Dream, winners at Larkhill and Greta Trethew respectively, entered.
But with Jane Williams’ team in such good form, the impressive looking Blackstaff is sure to start favourite following his good win at Black Forest Lodge in February.
Entries in the restricted race include Kenickie who won his maiden at the course last year but looked out of sorts on his seasonal reappearance at Milboune St Andrew. Also entered are Obamarama, Double Bank and Call Me Sir who were all winners at Black Forest Lodge earlier this season.
Concluding the card is a maiden race for older horses with 25 entries.
Entrance is 20 per car load, 10 per car and driver and 5 for pedestrians.
