APPLEDORE Primary School football team has been adopted – by Pirates!

The Appledore Pirates charity group has taken the young team under its wing and its first helping hand has been to supply new kit and footballs worth 500.

The Pirates fundraise all year to help local causes, notably the senior citizens, and decided to start this year – their 40th – by also focussing on the younger members of the community.

Their name and a sailing ship logo has been incorprated on the team’s new shirts and the delighted youngsters have changed their team name to the Appledore Pirates.

There are 25 members of the football team, ranging in age from eight to 11 years.

The Pirates are to stay in contact with team coach John Jefferies and if the team needs help with anything else, they will do so if they can, said Pirates’ secretary Teresa Hammett.

Fundraising events by the Pirates include their annual pram race, which will be on July 1 this year, Appledore Carnival and tug-o-war on August 14 and cash bingo in the Appledore Hall every Wednesday night, all supported by the public.
