Plenty of cool crustacean fun on Tuesday, August 20 as the crabbers return during Appledore and Instow Regatta week.
THE World Crabbing Championships comes to Appledore on Tuesday of next week (August 20).
Part of the Appledore and Instow Regatta week, competitors will be seeking to catch each other in a pincer movement as they line the quay with buckets and baited crab lines.
Last year saw celebrities Rory McGrath and Will Mellor take part while filming for the Channel Five show, Rory and Will, Champions of the World.
All manner of top secret baits will be tried on the day, but a local ‘secret weapon’ is bacon rind, although mackerel, sardine and anything fishy should also do the trick, as your average crab is not a fussy eater!
Crab lines are readily available at local shops and the action is often hottest at Appledore Quay Slipway. opposite Johns of Appledore.
The Devon crabs at Johns won’t be for catching, they’ll be for the popular Johns’ Café and its Devon Crab platters – the shop is even offering a free crab lunch for two to the person who wins the competition.
Appledore and Instow Regatta opens this Thursday, with a Gig race across the river. It continues for the coming week, with more nautical racing on Sunday including the infamous ‘Miller & Sweep’ Battle.
A new messy challenge for 2013 is the Across the River Tug of War on Saturday, August 24, as two teams face the challenge of pulling on a rope over the mud and sand at low tide.
