Archant

Braunton design student and friend create exhibition based on the things that didn’t quite make the cut.

REJECTED pieces of artwork and homeless hounds have been given a new lease of life thanks to a graphic design student from Braunton.

Ben West joined forces with fellow Kingston University student Alex Brown to create a novel exhibition of unused and discarded works of art that since toured several London venues.

Thanks But No Thanks contains a range of unique designs that never quite made the final commercial cut – including a rejected poster for the 2014 Winter Olympics, a hand lotion bottle that Space NK didn’t want and an abandoned Bob Dylan portrait.

The show culminated in the donated designs being sold with the resulting £700 going to Battersea Dogs Home.

Inspiration for the exhibition came after Ben and Alex submitted a poster to a competition and although they did not win, it left them wondering about other work that had become redundant because it hadn’t proved right for the intended brief.

A call for unwanted designs resulted in a variety of prints, paintings and posters, including a rejected poster for the 2014 Winter Olympics, a hand lotion bottle that Space NK didn’t want and an abandoned Bob Dylan portrait.

Thanks But No Thanks has been at Kingston University’s undergraduate design degree show, while more of the design duo’s work will be on display at Drays Walk Gallery in London, until July 8.
