Don’t miss Combe Martin’s unique tradition The Hunting of the Earl of Rone during spring bank holiday weekend May 23-26.
FOUR days of parade, pageant and spectacle take to the streets of Combe Martin this weekend as the Hunting of the Earl of Rone returns.
The unusual festivities start on Friday and end on Monday, with processions of characters, musicians, drummers, ‘grenadiers’ and the elusive ‘Earl’.
On Friday the colourful Hobby Horse, Fool, solders and drummers leave the beach at 7pm and head up the street for a preliminary search for the earl.
On Saturday the primary schoolchildren get to stage their own parade, leaving the school near the seafront at 11am.
On Sunday, the party spreads its ‘search’ to back streets and byways, leaving Sandaway at 1.30pm.
Finally on Monday evening shortly after 6pm the whole cast, including the now captured Earl, leave the very top of the village and make their way to the sea.
The captive is ‘shot’ several times enroute by ‘firing squad’, before being cast into the sea at sunset.
Partial road closures and traffic delays can be expected while processions are under way. For details visit www.earl-of-rone.org.uk.
