The story many be as old as time but this Barnstaple pantomime of Beauty and the Beast is bang up to date and fizzing with fun.

Earlier this year the future looked bleak for the Queen’s Theatre, but new management has waved the magic wand to bring the traditional Christmas panto back to Barnstaple where it belongs.

The in-house production of Beauty and the Beast from Parkwood Entertainments runs until December 31 and certainly ticks all the panto boxes.

Expect a lively magical mix of music, comedy and dance in the best traditions of good old-fashioned family fun, as the cast steps back in time to the village of Le Grand Derriere in old France.

Children will love it, but there are plenty of gags and West End-class song set pieces for adults to enjoy too, as well as some very polished choreography during the big dance numbers.

Eurovision and chart star Nicki French quite possibly steals the show as the wicked – but not too scary- Witch Van Rouge.

The larger-than-life Dame Ethel Eiffel – aka Benidorm’s Bobby Crush – is in towering form as the dame, with some wicked lines and audience engagement.

Comic Mick Dundee as Jean-Pierre keeps the laughs going with material suitable for every age group.

Jamie Lambert launches into some show-stopping musical numbers as Prince Christophe and the Beast, while one to watch out for is Melissa Potts as Belle, who delivers some spell-binding musical moments.
