Shammick Acoustic’s concert this Saturday (February 24) will present Derek Gifford, owner of one of the very best voices on the folk scene.
A previously featured artist at one of its Shammick Open Nights, the Pack O’ Cards in Combe Martin is delighted to welcome this mellow-voiced singer for a full concert.
Over the years, Derek has amassed an enormous number of songs, both traditional and modern, from a wide variety of sources.
He collaborated with Bury poet Keith Scowcroft, setting many of his poems to music, and also became known as a specialist in maritime songs, having appeared at the local Lancaster Maritime Festival for many years, then backed this up by working in the trio Three Sheets to the Wind.
Derek also has numerous recordings to his name, most recently Songs from the Past…Into the Future on the WildGoose label (on which can also be heard voices from Shammick Acoustic organisers, Tom and Barbara Brown), which particularly calls attention to environmental issues.
With Derek accompanying himself on guitar or bowed psaltery or just singing unaccompanied, a relaxed, laid-back and humorous evening can be anticipated, with loads of good choruses with which to sing along.
With support from local performers, the concert takes place at 8pm with doors open from 7.30. Tickets are £8 at the door, or £7 in advance from www.wegottickets.com/ShammickAcoustic.
