A feast of artwork is on display this January as the annual North Devon Arts exhibition opens at Broomhill Art Hotel near Muddiford.

The well-established New Year New Work exhibition opens on Sunday, January 14 and runs until February 25 in the main gallery.

As ever there is a hugely diverse showcase of work to see, including portraiture by Frank Pethica, landscapes and more by Jennifer Schamotta plus a stunning abstract from Tish Brown, to name just three.

North Devon Arts was formed in 1998, out of a need for rurally isolated artists of all types to get together to exchange ideas, meet regularly and generally be a force to advocate for artists and the arts in the area.

An informal ‘call for artists’ meeting held at Broomhill by kind permission of owners Rinus and Aniet saw 50-60 people turn up and Northern Devon Arts was born.

Among those present were the late Ken Sprague, cartoonist and painter and the famed John Oliver, who used to own the Lobster Pot at Instow, whose arm was twisted to become the first chairman.

After a few years, Stella Levy followed in his footsteps. She remained on the committee until last year when she left to focus on The White Moose Gallery.

The aims of the group have not changed and it now has 200-plus members, and holds monthly meetings at Broomhill on the second Wednesday of each month at 8pm.

Speakers include ceramicist Roger Cockram in January, Richard Meyer in February and Peter Ward in March.
