PACK your trunk and head for Elephant Day in Barnstaple this Saturday with a mammoth bundle of fun for the whole family.

Now in its seventh year, the unique community celebration of all things elephant will take place at the town square from 11am.

There will be children’s Victorian fairground rides, elephant hoopla, numerous stalls, games and local crafts, as well as food vendors, toys, face painting, plus a youth marching band and Samba Band.

There will also be a display of snakes and rescue bats for those who don’t mind getting a little closer to their wildlife.

The highlight of the day is when The Elephant Parade takes to the streets of Barnstaple in all its elephantine glory at 3.30pm, with all welcome to put on their elephant related costumes and join in.

It all commemorates the discovery in 1844 of straight-tusked elephant fossils in nearby Summerland Street.

Some tusk and bone fragments are at Barnstaple Museum, while whole teeth were taken to the Natural History Museum and on Saturday two experts from the museum will be bringing the teeth back to Barnstaple and available to chat to visitors about the remarkable discovery.

On Friday a group will be visiting Green Lanes Shopping Centre to ask people how much they know about the history of elephants, with a prize of a silver elephant, donated by Mark Parkhouse, and the winner will be announced on the Saturday.

Anyone who would like to take part in the parade or join in with Elephant Day is asked to call Simon Harvey on 07817 084812.
