Art gallery in Trinity Street marks its first birthday.

THE White Moose gallery in Barnstaple has celebrated its first birthday and a year that has exceeded expectations.

Julie Gavin and Stella Levy have given a new lease of life to the former Moose Hall in Trinity Street, after purchasing it because they were keen to create a new arts space in the town.

With the hard work and support of volunteers, the gallery’s first steps have been a great success, with eight exhibitions hosted in the past year, plus various workshops with visiting or local artists and educational projects.

On Friday, a year to the day since the doors first opened, visitors were invited along for a birthday celebration of afternoon tea and cake or evening bubbly.

“I think Stella and I have both been thrilled by how well the first year has gone, and what great support we have had from both artists and the wider community,” said Julie.

“We were expecting a fairly slow start and a slow take up of our exhibitions, but it has gone a lot faster than we anticipated.”

Stella said they had seen great support from artists, including at recent workshops as part of the Arts Wave project.

“We are up for joining in with theses kind of events as we like people to visit the gallery who might not normally do so,” she said.

White Moose is currently showing the Griffin Art Prize exhibition, which this year is only showing in London, Oxford and North Devon. It showcases the work of the winning and shortlisted artists.

White Moose is open every day except Sunday from 10am-5pm and has late night opening on the last Thursday of every month until 8pm.
