For a slice of pure feelgood pleasure you have got to see Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at the Queen’s Theatre in Barnstaple this week.

Opening night yesterday (Tuesday) saw X-Factor winner Joe McElderry take centre stage for 90 minutes of sheer enjoyment that left you wondering where the time had gone.

If you haven’t booked your tickets yet, there is still time – with a mix of matinee and evening shows running right up to Saturday.

The voice that impressed Simon Cowell and co didn’t disappoint as Joe McElderry soared through the catchy tunes that have made the show so well loved for years, with Close Every Door to Me and Any Dream Will Do proving stand-out performances, especially when he kicked into higher gear.

But it was not all about Joe – backed up by a sterling cast that included Trina Hill as the narrator and Ben James-Ellis as Pharaoh, the audience sat back to enjoy an all-singing, all-dancing spectacular from a very accomplished cast.

It was feast of comedy too, with clever little touches such as blow-up sheep and visible cues, to laugh-out-loud moments. You had to be there.

Pharaoh was a natural and the rest of the cast that made up assorted characters and Jacob’s sons – many in multiple roles – literally kicked up a storm as they effortlessly soared through the popular tunes that had the audience swaying and clapping in their seats.

A special mention should go to the girls and boys of Stagecoach Performing Arts Barnstaple, which has provided two choir groups for the show.

Any first-night nerves were well hidden as the group blended with the cast as if they had been performing it for weeks.

Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s timeless classic about the poor boy who made good was brought to Barnstaple by Bill Kenwright by special arrangement with The Really Useful Group and courtesy of Parkwood Theatres.

If you’ve never seen Joseph, you really should – and if you have, perhaps it’s time to go again?
