Ollie Staines, 14, from Torrington, has achieved his 1st Shodan black belt in aikido.
He is a member of Tenchi Ryu Aikido in Barnstaple, which is run by Brian Stockwell, 7th Dan and for the past six-and-a-half years has also attended the satellite club in Torrington, run by Geoff Murby 3rd Dan.
Ollie, who trains three times a week, is the first junior at the Torrington club to become a black belt.
