Barnstaple Amateur Boxing Club held their first home show of the season on Saturday night.

Topping the bill was Liam Laird, one of nine home boxers in action at Barnstaple Rugby Club.

Laird, in his 49th bout for the club, came up against Jonathon Kumuto from Finchley and District Amateur Boxing Club, where world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua was once a member.

In a non-stop light-middleweight match-up, Laird matched his strong opponent, putting in plenty of work rate over the three rounds, and picked off his opponent to earn a unanimous victory.

Preceding Laird was Troy Elworthy, who took on Bude’s Tyler Barber.

Elworthy, an ABA schools finalist last season, put in a strong performance to get a unanimous win.

Jed Davies was also a victor, picking up a majority decision over Finchley’s Jack Considine-Walsh after a strong finish to his three-round bout.

Ricardo Privitera made his debut for Barnstaple having boxed in his native Italy. Privitera was unlucky to lose by a split decision to Malmsbury’s Tom Millington.

Charlie Ludwell was on the wrong end of a split decision against Bobby Cane from Kings Academy.

Ed Cross was defeated by Malmsbury’s Morgan Coles, and in his first outing in the ring Billy Sheppard lost on points to Tommy Thompson from Bude.
