Several promising boxers beat dangerous opponents

Bideford ABC hosted a top bill of boxing to a massive local crowd at Bideford College, with boxers thrilling the crowd from Devon, Dorset and Cornwall across 16 bouts.

Old Rivals Ricky Dymond of Bideford and Harry Sugars of Barnstaple met with Sugars having won the last two meetings via split decision, but Dymond worked hard to gain revenge.

Sugars took the first round with long straight punches, but in the second Dymond took over with fast combinations and good movement.

It was a thrilling last round with both lads giving their all but Dymond showed the superior fitness in a big last round with big shots raining in to take a unanimous verdict.

Ben Owen topped the bill and proved a great bout with which to close the show.

Owen faced Dean Dodge from Yeovil and came out fast, working behind a strong jab and straight punches to get off to a good start.

In the second Dodge was the one pushing the pace but Owen was landing with big left hooks and chopping right hands to wobble Dodge on several occasions.

Both lads had success in the last in a great tear up with both bruised and bleeding come the end.

Owen won via split decision.

Billy Stanbury had the task of overcoming muscular opponent Stephen Mitchell from St Agnes ABC.

Mitchell came straight out the blocks at Stanbury, but the Bideford fighter showed good movement to weather the storm and then started coming back with his own work.

In the second Stanbury used the tactic of counter punching his aggressive opponent as he showed great timing in a very disciplined performance to give him the win on points.

A much improved Lewis Clarke boxed and moved for all three rounds, scoring with combinations and making his opponent Jordan Ruth of Plympton ABC hit thin air to win every round and a unanimous points verdict in a classy display of boxing.

Ryan Gumbley showed his usual display of guts and courage in a rematch with Curtis Hill from Devonport ABC.

Hill took the first round boxing and moving landing flush right hands.

With the home crowd egging him on, Gumbley stepped up a gear and kept the pressure on his opponent.

In the last round Gumbley was gunning to take Hill out, trapping him on the ropes for most of the round and forcing him to take a count from a solid backhand that wobbled him. Gumbley won a split decision.

Jayke Christie featured in his first bout and could prove one to watch as he beat Paignton’s Sam Williams on points.

Christie showed a fast jab and a dangerous right hand.

Bideford won all of their bouts on the night and also had two 10 year olds showing promise in Ethan Wells and Jacob Stevenson as they featured in skills contests.
