North Devon fast bowler earns first full squad call-up
NORTH Devon cricketer Jamie Overton has been named in the England squad for the looming one-day international against Ireland and the five-match series against Australia.
Overton, 19, and twin Craig first picked up bats and balls for the North Devon club based at Instow and were pretty soon talent spotted by Devon youth scouts.
The twins – mum Helen and dad Mark live in Northam - played through the age-groups for Devon from Under-10 upwards and by 17 were turning out for Somerset 2nd XI. Both attended West Buckland School
Jamie impressed for the Somerset 2nd XI in 2011, which led to his selection for England Under-19s for the one-day series against South Africa.
The twins featured for England U19s in 2012, when both were picked for the World Cup squad, having made their first-class and List A debuts.
Jamie toured South Africa with the U19s that winter, before forcing his way into Somerset’s first team at the start of the 2013 campaign. He got his first call-up to the Lions squad earlier this month and has now been promoted to the full squad for the five match series, which begins on September 6.
England have decided to rest a number of their key players on the back of a tough-fought Ashes series and Overton is one of five uncapped players - along with Michael Carberry, Gary Balance, Chris Jordan and Boyd Rankin - to benefit.
“This creates an excellent opportunity for players who have impressed in county cricket and for England Lions recently to test themselves at international level as we continue to build a squad ahead of the ICC Cricket World Cup which is less than 18 months away,” said ECB national selector Geoff Miller.
England also played a one-day game with Ireland ahead of the series on Tuesday, after the North Devon Gazette had gone to print.
Test winning captain Alastair Cook joins Stuart Broad, Ian Bell, James Anderson and Graeme Swann in missing the stand-alone one-day international against Ireland in Dublin and the five-match NatWest Series that follows.
Eoin Morgan will captain the squad in the absence of Cook and Broad.
Overton’s brother, Craig, was quick to congratulate his brother on the social media site Twitter. He tweeted: “Seriously proud of my brother today, been included in the England ODI squad for the first time.”
