Four North Devon clubs compete with the best in the South West
Four North Devon clubs took part in Ladies National Pilot Gig Championships held in Newquay to mark the end of the gig rowing season.
Torridge, Ilfracombe, Appledore and Barnstaple were among 90 crews from Cornwall, Devon, Dorset and Avon who took part.
Severe sea conditions saw the event postponed by three hours and led to five crews pulling out, but Torridge and Ilfracombe ladies A were unaffected as their close rivalry continued.
Both Torridge and Ilfracombe A sailed through to reach the quarter finals, where the course was made longer than previous rounds. Torridge ladies rowed first finishing in sixth position, while Ilfracombe ladies rowed well in the final heat - despite collisions and oar clashing at the first buoy and being pitted against the world champions. Torridge ladies went five seconds faster, placing them 21st overall with Ilfracombe A 22nd, the best results for both clubs this year. Ilfracombe’s B crew did well to take a creditable 35th, while Appledore’s A and B crews finished 53rd and 58th respectively.
Barnstaple A rounded off North Devon’s presence in Newquay, coming home 61st. The men’s championships take place on September 14 and 15.
