Rowers finish regatta second only to hosts

TORRIDGE Pilot Gig Club failed to disappoint at Teignmouth regatta on Saturday.

With 12 clubs competing from Devon and Dorset, the opposition was tough, but that did not stop Torridge picking up a number of good finishes on their way to second overall.

The ladies’ veterans continued their winning streak by dominating their race to win by a few boat lengths, while the mixed crew of Steph Stanley, Tracey Cox, Rhys Hollis, Colin Eastman, Tom Trapnell, Tracie Clarke and cox Robert Mould also taking a surprise first place by a commanding distance.

Despite a strong easterly wind, the club continued to finish in the top half of every race.

The ladies picked up third in the A race, fifth in the B and their C crew were sixth, while the men’s vets came fifth and fourth in their races.

The men’s A got off to a flying start to get up into second place, but with a broken pin slowing them down approaching the buoy the pack behind caught up, with a number of crews approaching at the same time. The Torridge crew were forced to the inside of the buoy, leading to disqualification.

The men’s B race was then stopped due to a rower from Salcombe collapsing mid race. The safety boat responded quickly to give him CPR and the rower is now recovering well in hospital.

Despite this difficult moment, the race was restarted and all of the clubs performed well, with Torridge men finishing a very respectable second.

With strong performances from all of the club members, Torridge yet again finished second overall, coming up just short of the standard set by host club Teign.
