Top fish for North Devon anglers

Record breaking smoothound and good bass reward those willing to brave the blustery conditions
IN between the battering swells some very good fish have been failing to local anglers – including a monster shore caught smoothound of 18 pounds 15 ounces for Julian Stainer from Landkey.
The colossal starry smoothound took 15 minutes to land after screaming off with a frozen peeler crab bait at a North Devon shore mark.
It breaks the Barnstaple Rod ‘n’ Reelers club record – and the same night Julian landed another three hounds, all into double figures and including a new club common smoothound record of 12lb 10 oz.
At the weekend Julian’s success continued, winning the Rod ‘n’ Reelers roving competition with a 11lb 1 ¾ oz bull huss of 111%.
Unfortunately it was not quite enough to provide top spot in the first North Devon League heat of the year for the Triple Hook team, taking second place to a fine near double figure bass of 9lb 15 ½ oz caught by Dave Brooke fishing for Combe Martin A. Andrew Atkinson took third with a grey Mulley of 3lb 2 oz.
The next league heat will be on the weekend of July 23/24, with the weigh hosted by Appledore. August is over the 13/14, with Bideford hosting.
