Barnstaple boxers Liam Laird and Joe Freeman were in action at different shows on Saturday night – and both came home with ‘bout of the night’ trophies.

Liam boxed Harry Webb at Exmouth Pavilion on the Lympstone ABC show and lost a tight contest on points after three tough and technical rounds.

Both boxers gave their all throughout the evenly-matched contest which deserved the ‘best bout’ award. The Barnstaple corner was happy to accept the offer of a return match at their own show at St John’s Community Centre on Novemebr 10.

In the meantime, Liam has the county rounds of the CYP in Bristol next Sunday, along with clubmate and Junior ABA semi-finalist Harry Sugars.

“Jersey” Joe Freeman was in inspired form at Launceston Town Hall, boxing the home club’s Hayden Orchard.

Joe gave a dominant display of skilful boxing, finding his way through his opponent’s tight guard and despite being tagged by some good shots in the first two rounds was always on top and won a unanimous decision.

Barnstaple’s Patrick Morton gets his first outing of the season and is hoping to make it five wins from six when he meets Mike Bellamy of Exeter at the Corn Exchange on Friday night.

Bideford Boxing Club’s Kier Mckinnon featured in his first senior bout after 18 months out, travelling to Leamington Spa to face Singh Navjot from Clearys ABC.

Mckinnon started fast, pushing his opponent back to the ropes and landing combinations to head and body. The second round was a more tactical affair as Navjot began switching stance and throwing shots from all angles, but Mckinnon did land a few hard left hooks to the body, leaving his opponent wincing.

The pace picked up again and Mckinnon landed crashing right crosses, but Navjot picked his own decent shots, leaving both lads level going into to the final round.

The Bideford boxer gave his all in a cracking final round, but his opponent began to beat him to the punch and finally took a majority points verdict.

Mckinnon now hopes to be in action on Bideford’s own dinner show at the Durrant Hotel on November 23. For tickets call Dick Kersey on 07841846552, Jeff Facey on 07970671909, Richard Grigg on 07949770616.
