BARNSTAPLE go into the Devon derby against visiting Brixham on the back of three defeats after losing 13-5 at Chippenham.

For Chips’ coach Danny Thomas it was an odd occasion, plotting the downfall of the side he played for with distinction as a youngster and also coached.

The only score in the first half was a Chippenham penalty kicked by Sam Saunders.

Barnstaple had their backs to the wall for most of the first 40 minutes, but kept Chippenham out.

Twelve minutes into the second half Ian Cook went in for a try that Saunders converted.

A Callum McDonald drop goal on the hour mark opened up a 13-point home lead.

Barnstaple had the final word in stoppage time when replacement Mike Peak went in for a try. Will Topps’ conversion to snatch a losing bonus point didn’t make it.
