This week’s North Devon Table Tennis League round-up
In the first league games of 2014, Smugglers closed the gap on Misfits in the first division with Mathew Thomas at the fore with three and Peter Hedge backing up with a couple. Martyn Beer replied with two for Misfits.
In the other premier match, Holsworthy A scored a maximum against a reduced Castle Knights, who may well be without Captain Gerald Luscombe for the rest of the season.
The second division looks to be the closest for a long time, with Chewaces leading the way after defeating the experienced Mad Batters 7-3, as Rob Herman brought Robin Gale’s undefeated run to an end.
Chulmleigh A had a real go at Holsworthy B, losing out in no small part due to Barry Stearman’s treble.
Hartland, who were top of the intermediate league, played eighth-placed Corinthians and narrowly won 6-4 as no player managed to score three.
Herons gained revenge against Littleham for their defeat earlier in the season, as new signing Marlon Cole proved the catalyst for victory.
For the first time in six years the North Devon league has a third division, and it is old stagers Dolphins who got off to a flyer against Chulmleigh B.
Mike Fawcett scored his first ever league treble, which was emulated by team mate Alan Slade. Newly-formed West Buckland also found the going difficult as Padlers’ Tim Cooke bagged a triple and Margaret Moys and Rob Wallis took doubles to make it a debut to forget for the newcomers, though James and Dave Moore did register West Buckland’s first points in the league.
