Joanna Konta and Heather Watson lead the British charge at the Aegon GB Pro-Series Barnstaple
Britain’s number two and three will compete in Barnstaple as top class women’s tennis returns with the Aegon GB Pro-Series Barnstaple swinging into the Tarka Tennis Centre this week.
The 2013 line up is an exciting one with Johanna Konta and Heather Watson leading the British challenge, Annika Beck, the 2012 Barnstaple champion, returning to defend her title, and American 2010 champion Alison Riske the top ranked player.
Riske, 23, from Hilton Head, South Carolina, has a current ranking of 58 after an impressive 2013, including reaching the last 16 of the US Open, and the third round of Wimbledon.
Another returning champion is 2012 winner, Annika Beck. The 19 year-old from Bonn, Germany beat Eleni Danilidou in a highly entertaining final 12 months ago, and achieved a career high this year when she broke the top 50 in August.
Beck has played the main draw of all four Grand Slams this year, and with a current ranking of 57 will be looking to use Barnstaple to propel herself back into the top 50.
Joanna Konta and Heather Watson, currently vying for the British number two slot behind Laura Robson, will provide a great deal of British interest in the draw.
Watson, who climbed to a career high of 39 earlier this year, returns to Barnstaple after a one year absence, while 22 year-old Konta arrives as the new British number two, having won a big-money event in Vancouver this summer.
Tournament Director Richard Joyner said: “This year’s line-up is especially exciting with Heather and Jo leading the British challenge, and Alison and Annika returning as former champions.
“The number of players returning each year is reflective of the high esteem in which Barnstaple is held.”
Tarka Director of Tennis Chris Gill said: “Tarka again is looking forward to welcoming players from the WTA Tour here in Barnstaple.
“I am sure we will draw in good local support in what has become a firm date in
the Devon diary for all avid tennis fans.”
Qualifying begins on Sunday, with the main draw starting on Tuesday. The singles and doubles finals are both scheduled for Sunday November 3.
