Bideford boxer batters quality opponent in Devon v Cornwall fight

BIDEFORD ABC’s Billy Stanbury topped the bill for Devon vs Cornwall against Dillyn Courtney in Newquay.

Courtney, from Camborne ABC, is well known in the Bideford club after his cracking contest with Jack Langford at the club’s dinner show last year, so it was always going to be an uphill battle for Stanbury against quality opposition in his back yard.

Stanbury showed no respect, starting fast and showing superior strength to back Courtney up with powerful combinations.

Stanbury pushed him around the ropes and fired away trademark body shots.

After realising he couldn’t trade with Stanbury, Courtney tried to box and move and showed glimpses of class, but it didn’t take long for the Bideford boxer to figure him out, moving his head and moving in at angles to get back inside to work away where he had most success.

Stanbury sensed that Courtney was tiring in the last and stayed on him with non-stop work for the final three minutes, bullying him with superior speed, power and work rate.

Courtney showed heart despite being battered and bruised to survive the distance but Stanbury took a wide points decision.
