Bideford rowers stay in contention for West of England honours after strong showing on the South coast
The hectic domestic regatta season continued on Saturday when Torquay hosted the eighth regatta of the 10 race season.
Despite rowing on the open waters of Torbay, conditions were just about ideal for all the crews and it proved another successful day for the Bideford Reds who ended up with seven class wins to show for their hard work.
In the junior section, the ladies’ junior 16 quad fours sees Bideford’s Blues and Reds crews locked in a struggle to top the table when the season closes at Bideford in a fortnight’s time.
In Torquay, Abbie Jones, Libby Willis, Jess Cox and Hannah Vincent plus cox Adam Curtis secured a vital victory over their rivals from the Blues to edge into a single point lead in the championship.
There were no such problems for the men’s junior 14 combination of James Jordan, Isaac Crowther, Alex Dualibi-Wilson and Jamie Norton plus cox Adrian Prust, who have stormed through the season to remain unbeaten.
Jordan and Crowther then went on to win the corresponding double sculls race while Dualibi-Wilson won his singles event to secure a further West of England Championship for the Reds.
The men’s J16 quad of Dan Crowther, Nick Dualibi-Wilson, Alex Rowland and Matt Harris picked up their second win of the season but still trail category leaders Totnes by four points.
There were mixed emotions for the Senior B/C squad of Adam Curtis, James Williams, Jon Lamont, Richard Prust and Luis Wilkins along with cox Abbie Jones, who will have been delighted with their win in the Senior B race where they still have hopes of catching current leaders Exeter.
But they will have been disappointed to finish only third in the senior C fours, losing ground to the current championship leaders from Exeter in the process.
The two remaining regattas will be staged at Dartmouth on Thursday and at Bideford on September 6.
