Beach will welcome the best in the British Life Saving Sport Surf Championships

Saunton Sands Surf Life Saving Club will be the proud host of the British Life Saving Sport Surf Championships this week.

From the 17th to the 25th August, over 5,000 competitors and families will come to Saunton Sands beach for the highlight of the surf life saving calendar – the prestigious National championships.

This event is usually held over the course of eight days for competitions for the Masters (30 years+), Youth (13 – 19 years) and Nippers (eight to 13 years) but this year will also include an extra day for the Inshore Rescue Boat (IRB) competition.

The beach at Saunton will be alive with the usual activity of the summer season but this year – and next year when the beach will again play host to the championships - will be buzzing with the energy of a series of competitions designed to test the skills and fitness of the competitors.

Club Chairman, Toby Ansdell, said: “We are delighted to be able to bring this important competition to North Devon in the club’s 50th year.

“The beach will be alive over the course of the week and we would encourage the public, locals and tourists alike, to come along and see what it is all about. This event has only been made possible thanks to the permission and generous support of Christies Estates at Saunton beach.

“Saunton Sands hosted the Devon competition earlier in the summer and we are now ready to welcome clubs from all over the country, showcasing Saunton Sands and North Devon as a fantastic destination.”

There are now over 80 clubs in the UK and Saunton Sands SLSC is one of the oldest and most successful clubs, winning the coveted Super Club of the Year six times for its success in all levels of the sport. North Devon itself boasts 4 thriving clubs – Saunton Sands, Bideford Bay, Croyde and Woolacombe.
