SAUNTON Sands Surf Life Saving Club were crowned champions once again at the British Inshore Rescue Boat championships at Boscombe, Bournemouth.

Saunton team members won the Ladies Open, Ladies Masters, Men’s Masters and came a close second to Bantham in the Men’s Open competitions.

Fun and games were had half-way through the day, when the dropping tide revealed a sandbank, causing some tricky driving conditions.

Event organisers re-arranged the programme and the competition finished late in the afternoon, with the medal presentations held with a full moon reflecting on the sea.

Next day, Boscombe beach held the first International and Development IRB Teams Challenge, which saw teams from Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, New Zealand and Poland compete with teams from Great Britain and England as well as Devon and Cornwall.

Many of the competitors from Saunton SLSC represented their country in the international competitions and Devon in the development races.

Rob Reid, Chris Gratton, Simon Harrington, Sophie Priddis, Keira Tierney, Sam Cordery, Cara Deasy and Flic Elliott (Exmouth) represented Great Britain. Jacob Sharp, Ian Allen and Toby Freeman were in the England team.

Devon caps were earned by Ryan Bennett, Andy Bennett, James Sharp, Jeff Priddis, Richard Harrison, Mark Henry, Holly Greenway (Croyde), Gill Hevingham, Jon Reid, Darren Pinkney and Paul Reid.

Many of the team now travel to Australia at the beginning of November to take part in the World Championships in Adelaide.
