Weston Hornets 43-24 Bideford

BIDEFORD’S winning run came to an end in the final game of the South West One season when they lost 43-24 to champions Weston Hornets.

Cleve had been trounced 57-10 on Saturday afternoon at King George V with Sam Olde scoring a try hat-trick in a third successive victory.

The Bank Holiday Monday trip to Weston proved a game too far for Bideford, who had problems from the start.

Two games in 48 hours put a strain on selection – and heavy traffic meant the team was delayed getting to Weston and the match kicked off half an hour late.

Bideford were soon 19-0 down, but battled back to 26-19 behind in the second half.

Weston pulled away in the last 20 minutes to complete a comfortable win.

Bideford’s try scorers were Harvey Brown, Matt Dennis and Andrew Baxter. Pat Sanders kicked three conversions and a penalty.

Olde got two in the first half to help Bideford towards a 29-0 lead in their meeting with Cleve.

James Buckland and Dave Evans got one each and there were three conversions and a penalty for Ollie Wickett.

Cleve pulled a try back through Harry Scofield, only to be hit by two in a row from Bideford for Baxter and Olde for his hat-trick.

Flanker Neil Evans, was next in for a try as Cleve got another one back.

Bideford finished with a flourish though as Chris Snell and Wickett stormed over.

Wickett converted all four tries in the second half.

Bideford are supposed to be playing Ivybridge in the Devon Intermediate Cup final before the season ends, but can’t agree a date for the game.

Devon officials said earlier this week if no agreement is reached the final will be cancelled.

ONE final that will go ahead is South Molton’s Devon Junior Cup showdown against Old Technicians this Saturday.

The game takes place at Old Techs’ Weston Mill ground in Plymouth.
