Torrington earn promotion play-off spot despite Devon One loss

This week’s Tribute Devon One round-up

Torrington are on their way to the promotion play-offs next month despite suffering an 18-17 defeat by Devon One champions Wessex.

Torrie outscored the visitors by three tries to two, but it was the reliable boot of captain Dan Morris that proved the difference for Wessex.

Try scorers for the visitors were flanker Dan Mather and centre Andy Alderman, with eight points from the boot of Morris.

Tries from Rob Elliott, Tom Gooch and Matt Coles proved to be in vain for the hosts.

Torrington can’t be overtaken to second place by third-in-the-table New Cross, even if they win their rearranged game at South Molton this Saturday.

New Cross could finish level on points with Torrie, but would only have eight wins to Torrington’s nine, which is the tie-breaker.

South Molton lost 20-17 at North Tawton last Saturday in their final league game.

Relegated Ilfracombe were 54-26 losers at New Cross.
