36-5 win over Avonmouth comes at a cost

BARNSTAPLE debutant Jacob Nash will be on concussion watch for the next three weeks after his 1st XV bow was cut short by a bang on the head.

Nash made his debut in the 36-5 home win over Avonmouth Old Boys in National Three South West.

Scrum-half Nash, who rejoined the club earlier this month after time with Bideford and Okehampton, went off with 12 minutes to go.

Pitch-side attention was rendered and apparent signs of concussion spotted there and then.

Having lost first choice James Bath due to injury until late February, which was one of the reasons for getting Nash back, Barum now have a scrum-half headache in more ways than one.

Avonmouth led early on thanks to a try by prop Phil Dickinson, but by the 14th minute Barnstaple had levelled thanks to a Winston James try at the back of a line-out.

James scored again on 27 minutes – dashing over from the 22 – and five minutes later Dave Kimberley marked his return after two months out with a try.

Flanker Chris Hodges, another newcomer in the Barum ranks on loan from Taunton, went over three minutes after the interval. Will Topps converted.

Topps got one himself on 51 minutes and converted that one as well.

With the Mouth a man down after flanker Greg Long was carded for punching, Barum were awarded a penalty try after a series of infringements by the visitors at five-metre scrums.

Barnstaple visit Worcester Wanderers this Saturday looking to complete a double having defeated them 24-19 at Pottington before Christmas.
