Torrington began their season in the Cornwall and Devon League at Lanner, while South Molton and Ilfracombe played their first matches in the David Butt Memorial Trophy
Torrington’s Cornwall and Devon return started badly with a 53-17 defeat away to Lanner.
Torrie, reeling from a spate of vandalism at their Donnacroft home on Thursday night, put in a strong performance until a flurry of second-half tries took the game away from them.
Their first score was a penalty try, before Ben Sawyer touched down for his first try for the first team. Sam Britton duly converted.
The first round of pool games in the Dave Butt Memorial Trophy saw wins for Ilfracombe and South Molton.
Ilfracombe defeated North Tawton 36-10 in Pool A.
Darren Light scored two tries for Ilfracombe in a man-of-the-match performance, with Ali Ravenscroft, Radford Chugg and Danny Wheeler also crossing.
Dermot Dalton kicked four conversions and a penalty.
South Molton were 37-5 winners against visiting Topsham.
Molton had worked themselves into a 22-0 half-time lead, with no. 8 Dan Smith scoring a hat-trick.
Ilfracombe go to Topsham this Saturday and South Molton make the short trip to North Tawton.
