Bideford were beaten by Cullompton at King George V on Saturday

Bideford go to South West One West leaders Drybrook this Saturday anxious to avoid a third straight defeat.

Cullompton twice came from behind to win 25-19 at King George V last time out, leaving Bideford fifth in the table.

It was a close-run affair in which Bideford harried Cully all the way through and were rewarded with a late try for a losing bonus point.

Cully’s Lewys Ryan slotted two penalties either side of a converted try by Bideford prop Richie Norman in the opening 20 minutes.

Marcus Busch went over in the corner to put Cully ahead, but Bideford came back with a try on the run for slippery full-back Peter Bowes. Chris Snell slotted a second conversion for a 12-11 home lead.

Busch’s second cornertry on 53 minutes, converted by Ryan, put Cully back in front and there they stayed.

Busch was cruising in for his third, but when he saw trouble ahead Ryan took the pass and went over for a self-converted effort and a 25-14 lead.

Hooker Dave Evans scored the Bideford try that gave Cully the jitters in added time.

Bradley Goaman, the Bideford team manager, felt it was one that got away.

“The game was there to be won – and we had numerous opportunities to win it,” said Goaman.

“We made far too many mistakes at key moments, which was extremely frustrating.

“The only positive was we managed a bonus point.”
