Barnstaple’s director of rugby Kevin Squire isn’t reading much into his side’s 45-24 defeat away to leaders Weston – and recommends rival coaches to do the same.

“Weston are a better side than last year when we beat them twice, with some new players, new coaches and a new-found discipline,” said Squire.

“They weren’t that good though and the reason we lost was because we played sloppily. I can look at the match and pick out 21 points we gave away without them doing anything.

“Weston may be unbeaten, but my message to the division is they are not unbeatable.”

Winston James and Tom Skelding had a try each for Barnstaple, whose remaining points came from four Josh Squire penalties and a Mark Lee conversion.

Barnstaple head to Brixham this Saturday for their first Devon derby of the National Three South West season.

Squire has started on the road to recovery after surgery on a fractured hip and a broken ankle.

Barum’s director of rugby was putting his professional skills as a builder to good use 10 days ago doing some maintenance work on the Chick Shed mini-stand at the club when he fell off his ladder.

While Barum were beating Avonmouth Old Boys 35-8, Squire was undergoing surgery in North Devon District Hospital.

Doctors sent him home on Wednesday night after giving him a dip in the hydrotherapy pool first.

Squire won’t be dancing the fandango for a day or two, but he is already up and about on crutches and directing operations again.

HAT TRICK

SAM OLDE bagged a try hat-trick as Bideford raced to a 32-11 win over Honiton in the Western Counties division.

Honiton were holding on 15-5 down at the break with Nick Guilbert scoring their try.

After the interval it was largely one way with two George Meadows penalties all the visitors could manage.

Dave Slee came in as the extra man from full-back to score Bideford’s first try.

Ollie Wickett cross kicked for Olde to run through and score the second. There was one conversion for Wickett and a penalty.

Olde completed his treble in the second half. Wickett converted both tries and another penalty.

Bideford go to Ivybridge this Saturday.

MISSED CHANCES

ILFRACOMBE should have got more than the 8-8 draw they picked up against visiting Tamar Saracens.

Will Grant gave the hosts the lead with a penalty but Sarries responded with a try from a long rolling maul to lead at the break.

Grant put his side in front again with a try under the posts but he missed the simple conversion which proved crucial when Sarries levelled the scores with a penalty kick.

Ilfracombe then missed three penalty attempts and missed countless scoring opportunities as the visitors held out for a draw.

Ilracombe’s next game is away to Buckfastleigh.

TORRINGTON went down 34-7 away to Plymstock Albion Oaks in Devon One.

Mark Quick went over after a series of pick and drives and his score converted by Rob Ovenell.

Torrington make the long trip to Salcombe this Saturday.

SOUTH Molton had no game in Devon One last Saturday. They go to Topsham this Saturday

BUCCS ROUT BUDE

JASON Slade and Matt Brayley both scored try hat-tricks as Barnstaple Buccaneers’ routed visiting Bude 67-7.

Barum team manager Andy Staff had his work cut out getting a side together for the game – and an hour before kick-off was running through set moves with last-minute recruits.

Ten minutes into the game Buccs were 7-0 up and by half time a mighty 43-7 lead had been opened up. Bude tightened up after the break, but couldn’t prevent Barum crossing four more times.

Slade went in twice to complete his hat-trick.

First-half tries went to Byron Saunders, Slade, Nathan Gosling, Matt Brayley (2), Lewis Joce and Nigel East. Saunders kicked two conversion and Brayley two more.

Slade (2), Brayley and Andrew Swales topped up the tally in the second half.
